The Colosseum - Rome

I'm back with another post from the scorching summer heat of Rome today. And, inevitably, with it being our first time in the Italian capital, it was mandatory for us to hop on over to the one and only Colosseum.

Unmissable, even from several streets away, but if you are struggling to find it yourself, simply join the flocks of tourists drifting in its general direction.

It really is as striking in reality as it appears in photographs. We were taken aback by its sheer scale and grandeur, yet perhaps not in the typical sense as it is thousands of years old.

Built entirely of concrete and sand, the Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre of all time.

Quite the feat, huh?

^ Just me admiring one of the most famous landmarks ever built.

It has 80 arched entrances and is estimated to have been capable of holding approximately 55,000 people. So, as you may have imagined, it is huge.

It was used primarily for gladiatorial contests and other forms of public entertainment.

From the inside, you really do feel like you are in the very heart of Rome. The views span what feels like the whole of the city, giving you a peak of all of its beauty.

Just one of many breathtaking monuments which can be seen from inside the Colosseum. 

The sun shone brightly (as it usually does at the height of summer in central Italy) but that didn't stop us from exploring every crevice of the amphitheatre.

On another note, I've been obsessed with these Adidas Originals lately. They're not cheap but they served me well throughout our trip, which involved a lot of walking. 

They look cute with virtually every outfit and I would recommend them to anyone on the lookout for a good pair of white trainers!

The contrast between the renovated parts of the structure and the crumbling arches really is astounding. It gives you a hint of what the Colosseum would have looked like in all its glory.

After several hours, we waved goodbye to the beautiful Colosseum peeking through the bushes and wandered back to our hotel.

As ever, Italy delivered in terms of beautiful buildings on our walk back. 
This courtyard was so dreamy that we had to return for dinner the following evening.

Just one more post left from Rome *sighs* and then it's back to reality..
